USB/SERIAL Cable recommendation for Windows 8.1

My old laptop finally crapped. The usb/serial cable I have for my LM-1 only has drivers up through Vista. I remember back when I set up Logworks having trouble with the first cable I tried. The one I have now has been good for 8 or 9 years and its a Belkin. Any particular brand recommendations for a usb/serial adapter that will work with windows 8.1?

Did you look for updated drivers on Belkin's website?

Yeah, that was the first thing I tried. Only had drivers for Vista and older. I found an adapter at a local electronics store that supports Windows 8. Its an off brand (Insignia). So far, so good.

It takes some poking around, but usually it's possible to find out what chipset the adapter uses, then you can get up to date drivers straight from the chipset maker. FTDI is probably one of the most common.

Belkin and the like (and Creative... those idiots will never get another thin dime from me) are bad about releasing dozens and dozens of functionally identical (or even exactly identical) devices that differ only by one or two digits in the device ID string, and then restricting their drivers to install only with that one specific device ID string, just so they can 'discontinue' driver support 3 months after the part's release date and force you to go buy a new cable or sound card or whatever it is.
