Needle sticking on cast iron Zenith: convert to ball?

Hello All,

I've been fooling with an old Hercules "KLC" flat six in a '56 Chriscraft Sportsman. Twice now, the "rubber" needle has stuck closed. Once prior to running the engine on the floor, once in the boat. Major pia in the boat, as the carb sits down against the structure. You can't get the carb apart, or even off of the intake. This requires removal of the carb and intake to do anything.

If you flip the carb over, just the weight of the float is sufficient to cause the needle to stick, and several psi of pressure will not unseat it.
The needle is loose, no mechanism to cause the needle to be pulled down when the float drops. The rubber seems a bit soft. I suspect it might have been an old stock carb kit [pricey!], maybe the mat'l is being attacked by the E10?

I could fashion a wire clip to cause the float to pull down on the needle. Or, should I just modify the needle for a ball? I've seen a thread on this procedure for QJs, can't find it at the moment.

Thanks for any advice.
Dave

Hmm.

Perhaps simplest fix would be a needle from another carb with similar diameter seat that has a pull wire?

Pulled a spare carb apart, original needles were steel, not Viton etc.
